Nexplanon® – Contraception

Introduction

Nexplanon® is a small, thin, flexible plastic rod that is inserted under the skin of a woman’s upper arm as a long-acting, reversible form of contraception. It releases the hormone progestin, which thickens cervical mucus and prevents ovulation to prevent pregnancy. It is a highly effective form of birth control with a low failure rate.
Causes
Nexplanon® works by releasing the hormone progestin, which thickens cervical mucus and prevents ovulation to prevent pregnancy.
Symptoms
The most common side effects of Nexplanon® are changes in menstrual bleeding, such as irregular bleeding or no bleeding at all. Other side effects can include headaches, nausea, breast tenderness, weight gain, and mood changes.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is not necessary for Nexplanon® contraception, as it is a preventive measure and does not treat any underlying condition.
Treatment
No treatment is required for Nexplanon® contraception. The device can be removed at any time if a woman decides she wants to become pregnant or switch to a different form of birth control.l.

Precautions

Nexplanon® is not recommended for women who have a history of blood clots, liver disease, breast cancer, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Women who are breastfeeding should also avoid Nexplanon®. It is important to discuss any medical conditions or concerns with a healthcare provider before choosing Nexplanon® as a form of contraception. It is also important to use condoms in addition to Nexplanon® if protection against sexually transmitted infections is desired.
